When to Sell Aging Wholesale Inventory

Every day a car sits costs money, but most dealers can’t say how much. Here’s a simple way to decide when to cut the price or wholesale it out.

Quick Answer

Sell when the daily cost of holding a car is more than the realistic gain from waiting. Holding cost is floor plan interest plus any upcoming curtailment, plus expected price drop. Track days in stock and all-in cost per VIN daily, and set price-drop and wholesale-out triggers before curtailments hit.

The Math

The Daily Holding-Cost Formula

Three numbers decide it.

1

Floor plan interest per day

Amount financed × annual rate ÷ the day basis your lender uses (often 360 or 365). Use our floor plan interest calculator.

2

Curtailments

Many floor plan agreements require a principal paydown after a set number of days. Know when yours hits. See curtailment fee.

3

Expected price drop

What the car is likely to lose in market value while you wait. Base it on your own recent sales and current auction results.

Worked Example

A Hypothetical Example

Numbers below are made up for illustration only.

  • A car is floored at $15,000 at a hypothetical 9% annual rate on a 365-day basis: about $3.70/day in interest.
  • You expect it to lose about $10/day in value, so holding costs roughly $13.70/day, about $411 over 30 days.
  • If a buyer offers $300 less than your ask today and you don’t realistically expect better within 30 days, taking the offer costs less than waiting.
  • If a curtailment is due within those 30 days, add that cash need to the decision.
Triggers

Set Aging Triggers Before You Need Them

Decide rules in advance so emotion doesn’t.

  • Track days in stock per VIN from the purchase date, not the date it hit the lot.
  • Track all-in cost per VIN daily: purchase, auction fees, transport, recon and accrued interest. See true cost per vehicle and wholesale dealer accounting.
  • Price-drop trigger: a set number of days after which you reprice.
  • Wholesale-out trigger: a set number of days, or a set number of days before curtailment, after which the car goes back to auction or another dealer.
  • Review weekly: sort by days in stock and accrued interest so the oldest money-losers surface first.
